1. Pick the best format for your nanny CV
A nanny cares for one or more children at their client's home. They take care of the child's meals and safety, help them with homework and teach them socially approved behaviours. The purpose of a nanny CV is to present that you have the experience and skills needed to look after children.
However, the competition for top job offers for nannies is high. In 2024 there were more than 63 thousand registered childcare providers in England. That’s why your CV should be as perfect as a little baby’s feet. Let’s start by formatting it correctly:
- Place your contact information at the top of your CV.
- Pick a chronological CV format, as it’s the easiest to skim for parents and recruiters.
- Don’t go crazy with the fonts. Choose simple CV fonts and limit yourself to just two—one for CV headings and one for the rest of the text.
- Save your CV as a PDF file. This way, the layout of your CV will look the same on all devices.
They say looks aren’t everything; the same goes for a CV. Let’s focus on what a job-winning CV for a nanny should consist of.

2. Write a nanny CV summary or objective
Your nanny CV personal statement should convince the caregivers that they can trust you with their kid’s safety. A CV profile’s job is to prove to them that you’re able to give Mary Poppins herself a run for her money.
A CV personal statement is an umbrella term for CV summaries and objectives. Okay, but which one should you choose?
Write a CV summary if you’re an experienced nanny. Think about all the key characteristics that make you a good nanny. Present tangible results of your work, such as improving the kids’ school grades through tutoring, having a clean driving record, etc.
If you have less than 2 years of nannying experience, go for a nanny CV objective. Focus on your skills, as well as the transferable skills acquired at school or other jobs. Catch the parents’ attention with your enthusiasm and love for children.
Are you a nonsmoker? Mention it, too, since it’s a much-desired quality for nannies. If you never smoke, you exceed the requirements for nannies registered with Ofsted, who are forbidden from smoking only when caring for the kids.
Pro Tip: Don’t use the same CV for all work opportunities. Tailor it to the specific requirements mentioned in the job description.
3. Present your work experience
Are you as skilled as Nanny McPhee and unafraid even of the most unruly children? Or are you a dedicated nanny with just a few years of experience? To create a compelling nanny CV, you should make your work experience section as enticing to the decision-makers as chocolate is to kids.
Follow the steps below to create a work experience section as good as SpongeBob SquarePants’ krabby patties:
- Use the reverse chronological format and list your most recent job first.
- Fill each entry with your job title, company name (if applicable), dates worked, and no more than 6 bullet points describing your accomplishments. You can use fewer bullet points when presenting less recent work experience positions.
- Begin each bullet point with an action word to radiate competence and professionalism.
- Don’t just present your responsibilities. Focus on highlighting your most significant achievements. Quantify whenever possible.
- Tailor your work experience section to the job description.

4. Mention your educational background in a CV for a nanny
If you have over 5 years of nannying experience, limit yourself to the basics when showcasing your education. If you’re more of a beginner or writing a career change CV, then expand on your educational background. Use a bulleted list to present relevant extracurricular activities, a high GPA, etc.
Education does not determine whether you’ll get the job you’ve had your sights on. However, it’s always a good idea to include it in your CV, especially if you have a degree in pedagogy or other similar field.

5. Create a nanny CV skills section
Knowing the lyrics of “Baby Shark” by heart is just one of the skills that caregivers and recruiters are looking for in a nanny. Being a nanny requires having multiple hard and soft skills, so how are you supposed to know which ones to list on your CV?
All you need to do is tailor your skills section to the particular nannying job description. Instead of starting from scratch each time you create this section, build a master list of all your relevant skills.
Skim the job ad and cherry-pick fitting hard and soft skills. Ensure your skills are reflected in the other sections of your CV to make it look more professional and compelling. Check the list below for some inspiration:

6. Make your nanny CV unique and add extra sections
Adding relevant additional sections to a CV for a nanny is like shouting “caaandieees” in a room full of toddlers. That’s how you get the attention of the hiring managers and make them favour you over many other candidates.
Extra sections in a CV are beneficial when you haven’t been working as a nanny for a long time. For example, putting any foreign languages on a CV is always good. Have you done any volunteer work? Mention it, too, since it speaks volumes about your character.
Pro Tip: Nannies in the UK don’t have to register, but if you’ve joined the Childcare Register, highlight it in your CV because it makes you look more credible. An easy way to get some extra points from the hiring managers is also having completed first aid training.
7. Attach a cover letter to your nanny's CV
Attaching a cover letter seems to be as popular among the candidates as eating brussels sprouts is among 5-year-olds. However, both have significant benefits and are worth the effort.
Adding a short cover letter gives you space to win the parents’ hearts. Plus, they’ll appreciate the extra effort you’ve made. So, how to write a cover letter? Follow these tips:
- Pay attention to proper cover letter formatting.
- Polish your cover letter opening to perfection.
- Briefly describe what makes you the perfect fit for the job and how they’ll benefit by choosing you.
- Finish with a strong call to action and ask for a meeting or a call.
- If you don’t hear back after a week, please send a follow-up email. It may be that one thing that will tip the scales in your favour.
